Within These Walls
Recommendation:
This site is appropriately sized for the content and activities. Teachers can use components of the site or the entire site to launch a study of historical evidence. The graphics are relevant to the time periods and involve students actively in viewing the information.
Description:
This Smithsonian site looks at 200 years of history through one house in Ipswich, Massachusetts, and five families who inhabited it. From the website: "The focus of the exhibition Within These Walls... is a 2 story frame house from Ipswich, Massachusetts, and the stories of five families who made the house their home. Covering five time periods from 1757-1945, this Web site introduces historical evidence from the exhibition and shows not only how historians researched this house, but also how you and your students can research the built environment."
Possible uses:
Students can explore all five families and the history of the time periods through this house. Teachers can also focus students on one time period to accompany a social studies unit. Each family/period page includes audio, photographs and an interactive floor plan. Classes can use this site as a guide to become a house detective of their own home or building in their community. Students can test their history knowledge with a simple online audio and visual activity called 'Go Back in Time.'
