Planetarium
Recommendation:
The puzzles provide excellent explanations of their solutions for teaching. The animations are well done and finding the clues to solve the puzzles is half the fun. It combines curiosity and critical thinking to solve the 'minor' puzzles that lead up to the grand solution. The FAQ section and the help section are valuable in familiarizing with the project; the home page does not provide much information about the project.
Description:
Planetarium is a puzzle story told in twelve weekly installments. From the site: "A girl with complete foresight but no recollection of the past receives a love-letter from beyond the end of her future. Guided by her friend the mathemagician, she begins a journey through the events which his calculations have predicted and her intuition has foreseen, towards the source of the curious letter. "Each installment contains three puzzles -- usually one riddle, one number problem and one tricky puzzle -- whose answers themselves form an overall puzzle, which can only be solved when the whole of Planetarium has been completed. "Each Planetarium installment consists of an illustration of a scene in the story, framed in a border with other puzzle elements and buttons. Clicking on the characters (or objects) within the illustration evokes text relating to that character -- perhaps a dialogue they are having with another character, or part of the story narrative, or possibly a riddle that the character is presenting."
Possible uses:
Math classes can participate in this twelve week puzzle story in class, as homework or as a whole class project once a week. This puzzle site can also be used for extra credit or challenge for students.
