Write Chinese
Recommendation:
The writing activity occurs on a grid, focusing attention to where strokes start and finish. While this activity is fun and educational, it cannot teach the full art of brush painting. But as an introduction and exploratory activity, it is simple and fun. It provides several options for the level of the writing (with computer assistance or not, with a model or not, etc.)
Description:
Write Chinese provides an interactive applet to do simulated brush strokes of Chinese characters. Information about Chinese characters, stroke order, different types of strokes and calligraphy is provided. Five interactive lessons allow users to use the computer to create characters. Mandarin and Cantonese words are provided as well as a definition of the character.
Possible uses:
Students studying Chinese can learn about some of the writing and about a few characters from this site and practice these with computer writing. The program requires distinct angles and start and end points. This will help direct student attention to these details.
