WISE
Recommendation:
These projects are not meant to be units on their own, but to be capstone activities, used at the end of a unit to "integrate new knowledge into a meaningful framework." In the teacher support area, teachers can find what students need to know before beginning a project. Time exploring the site, finding a relevant project and running through the project to know what to expect, would be necessary before using the program with students. This is a great program to integrate technology into curriculum. Students will be engaged in the process.
Description:
From the website: "The Web-based Inquiry Science Environment (WISE) is a free on-line science learning environment for students in grades 4-12, supported by the National Science Foundation. In WISE, students work on exciting inquiry projects on topics such as genetically modified foods, earthquake prediction and the deformed frogs mystery. Students learn about and respond to contemporary scientific controversies through designing, debating and critiquing solutions , all on the World Wide Web! "Students do most WISE activities on a computer, using a web browser such as Netscape or Internet Explorer. Special WISE software guides students through `evidence´ web pages that provide content, `notes´ and `hints´ that encourage students to reflect, and other tools for data visualization, causal modeling, simulations, on-line discussion with classmates and assessment. "WISE also offers a project authoring environment, in which teachers can customize projects to their own needs, or even create their own projects!"
Possible uses:
Teachers can use an already created project or create their own. Lesson plans, projects, connections to national standards and assessment tools are all components of the project along with teacher support. Students work in pairs to complete the project. The projects may involve online work, classroom experiments, discussions and writing.
