WebRanger
Recommendation:
At first this site seems a bit of a jumble without a focus. But it does center on the vast range of National Parks. Completing activities to get the secret word for the final passport adds a bit of a game element to the site. The individual activities share information in an interactive manner that is appropriate to the age level, attention span and reading skill level.
Description:
That National Parks vary greatly in their focus , from wildlife to historical places. This site comprehensively covers that wide range with interactive experiences and information. Organized into three levels (6-8, 9-12, 13+), each level has three tours and many activities. As students work through these activities they discover secret words that lead them to print their own WebRanger passport. From the website: "This is the National Park Service´s site for kids of all ages. If you love our National Parks, Monuments and Historic Sites, this site is for you. If you are new to our National Parks, we hope this site helps you experience how wonderful they can be."
Possible uses:
Have students work through all the activities at a particular level to earn their passport. Find relevant information or an activity to share with the class related to curriculum. Use the `Activity List´ at the bottom of the level page to see a listing of the activities and topics. Students can conduct research using this site.
