Virtual Tour of the Sun
Recommendation:
This site is a slide show of images with accompanying information. There are also a few Quicktime videos. The site carries ads by Google, but they are on the side and obviously ads. This site was created by an individual, not necessarily for education, so make sure the information is accurate and supported by other resources as well. This project appears to have been created in the mid-90s, so updating any information is worthwhile, too.
Description:
From the site: "In the following `Trip through the Sun' you'll see flames on the Sun larger than ten earths, winds going 1000 mph and you'll see how the earth eventually will be scorched by the dying Sun. "The duration of this journey is about 20 minutes. It shows spectacular images and MPEG animations of solar flares, sun spots, magnetic fields and solar eclipses and explains a lot about the science of the sun and the influence it has on the solar system."
Possible uses:
Teachers can share this entire slide show or portions of it, as pertain to lessons about the sun. Students can use the site for research purposes or to find visual components to use in a presentation about the sun.
