Time and Frequency Exhibits
Recommendation:
The exhibits are the most applicable component of this site for classroom use. It is text heavy for younger students. Teachers can find interesting facts and information to share with students without having to share the site with them. Or teachers can find certain components to use in teaching.
Description:
The National Institute of Standards and Technology has a division in Time and Frequency. Part of this site contains five online exhibits related to time. `A Walk Through Time´ follows timekeeping from ancient to modern methods. `Calendars Through the Ages´ gives an overview of the calendar system along with other ethnic and historical calendars. Other exhibits focus on the invention of the quartz watch, daylight saving time and the NIST´s work. From the website: "The Time and Frequency Division, part of NIST's Physics Laboratory, maintains the standard for frequency and time interval for the United States, provides official time to the United States, and carries out a broad program of research and service activities in time and frequency metrology."
Possible uses:
High school students studying frequency and time can utilize the articles and exhibits on this site for research. Study what physicists at the institute do and why their role is so important. For middle school students, use this site in math to extend understanding of the concept of measurement. Teachers of younger students can find images and information to share to expand understanding of time and calendars beyond the daily classroom calendar.
