This site provides an incredible introduction and an encyclopedic (brief, categorized) look at the history of the symphony from 1750 to 1950. The graphics are well done; the site is well organized and easy to use. The Symphony area provides audio of various pieces and some include a listener“s guide. This guide provides biographical information on the composer and a breakdown of the musical score.

Description:

From the website: "The aim of The Symphony - An Interactive Guide is to provide a comprehensive resource for people wanting to expand their knowledge of the symphony - Western art music's richest and most important genre. The site features comprehensive biographies of the major symphonic composers, browseable by country or by an alphabetical list. And thanks to the Queensland Youth Symphony Orchestra and their conductor John Curro, live recordings of nine great symphonies can be heard on this site via RealAudio. "Also included is a timeline showing musical events in their historical context, an explanation of musical forms and structures and a complete guide to the instruments of the orchestra. "We have included a strong interactive element in the site. Users can try our symphonic quiz, take part in our survey or participate in our discussion board."

Possible uses:

Students can use this site as a research resource for composer biographies and musical events. In pairs students can research a particular composer or instrument and then use the site as part of their presentation to the class. This site can be used by music teachers to share audio clips of some pieces and individual instruments.
