Starfall
Recommendation:
Starfall offers interdisciplinary (with music and art) books for online reading. The text changes color as it is read. When students are engaged in an activity, they simply need to click the mouse, not click and drag, which makes it easier for young children. The site offers a scope and sequence that carefully lays out the skills covered. The stories are animated with bright colors and fun characters.
Description:
Starfall offers fifteen units to help students learn to read. The first units begin with phonics and the last units incorporate comprehension, phonics, compound words and writing. From the website: "Reading is a vital part of life and we feel that no child should be left behind. That is why we are offering this on-line website for free to everyone. Our books and games offer beginning readers the opportunity to explore and interact with words and the sounds that make up those words. Decoding is an essential skill that will develop your child into a fluent reader some day. We focus on simple, fun interactivity and the sounding out of almost every word. All your child has to do is click on the screen, watch and listen! "Starfall was developed by carefully observing the way students learn to read as they interact with computers. The website is simple to navigate, engages the student's attention and engenders a love of reading and learning."
Possible uses:
Teachers can find many activities to use with students on this site. Have whole class experiences via a projector or in a computer lab.
