The value of the online book club is dependent on how many other students are participating and their grade level relative to your students. Other students ignore some of the comments posted by students. Combining this site with in-class work (pairs, small group or whole class) would buoy the program. Or if you teach sections of the same course, students can participate and can then depend on responses from peers in the other class sections.

Description:

Planet Book Club offers online book clubs for students to participate. Students can communicate with students around the country about the current book club book. Students can read book reviews and find homework help in the form of organized lists of websites deemed reliable for research. The site also offers resources for teachers and parents. A forum for teachers allows them to share ideas, questions and comments with their peers around the world.

Possible uses:

Classes can participate in an online book club as a component to the in-class book clubs. Enrich students who are strong in language arts by having them participate in an online book club. Teachers can pose questions to other teachers and learn about the methodology of book clubs.
