This site looks as if it started in 2000 (hence its name), but it is also currently (2005) seeking a sponsor to keep it going. The applet interactive demonstrations are well designed and a cast of characters carries on a conversation to further question and explain the physics involved. This is well done and encourages critical thinking and questioning in students as they read and explore different aspects of physics. The table of contents is the best listing to work from to see all the offerings on the site.

Description:

Physics 2000 offers demonstrations of physics topics. Explore Einstein“s revolutions in physics, learn about atoms and theoretical physics such as waves, quantum mechanics, polarization, the periodic table, etc. From the website: "The goals of Physics 2000 are to make physics more accessible to students and people of all ages and to counter its current negative image; to demonstrate the connection between modern technology and earlier basic research; to foster an appreciation for the accomplishments of 20th century physics. "The guiding principals for Physics 2000 are to tailor the learning process to the Internet, make learning experiences interactive, organize material from the familiar to the abstract and make the learning experience friendly."

Possible uses:

Teachers can use these applet demonstrations as presentations during class. Students can `act out“ the characters involved to maintain student interest and further engage students in more discovery of the concepts. Students can also explore this site in pairs, focusing on a particular topic, and report back to the class about what they learn.
