This program adds a unique perspective to a study of American History. Currently (1/06) only lesson one (of five) is available online. It appears that the full program was to be up in the Fall of 2005; sign up to be notified when the full program is available. The lesson is well developed and provides comprehensive coverage with the necessary reproducibles and multimedia resources. The lesson is really well organized and easy to follow with clickable icons and words. A teacher´s guide is included.

Description:

The NEA and Lincoln Center provide materials to connect the development of jazz music with historical events in America. From ESN review: "`Jazz in the Schools´ is a new web-based, multimedia curriculum from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) that explores jazz as an indigenous American art form and as a means to understand American history. The five-unit, web-based curriculum and DVD toolkit are available free of charge to high school teachers of social studies, U.S. history and music. Lesson titles include The Advent of Jazz: The Dawn of the Twentieth Century; The Jazz Age & The Swing Era; Bebop & Modernism; From the New Frontier to the New Millennium; and Jazz: An American Story. Each unit includes a teachers' guide with teacher tips, cross-curricular activities and assessment methods, as well as student activities, period photographs, video footage, related musical excerpts and links to additional resources."

Possible uses:

These lessons can be followed and used as a complete unit. Or find components related to a specific time or historical event and utilize the music and information on the site to enhance understanding. Teachers can assign pairs of students specific essays or links to read. Students can then be experts on those details and share them while learning about American history.
