Musical Mysteries
Recommendation:
This site is a good introduction to some basic musical themes for young students. The activities are set up to be completed in order to solve a mystery. However, the activities are not really connected to solving a mystery. Students simply complete the activities and find the lost music, which is a bit anticlimactic for an older viewer. The activities themselves vary, which is nice. The content is basic and some need introduction so students focus on the musical value of the activity, otherwise they can seem more like a game.
Description:
Musical Mysteries find a lost musical score by completing eight music activities. From the website: "The resource helps pupils to explore basic musical concepts in sound, rhythm and mood. As the pupils work their way through the site, they gain valuable listening, composing and musical interpretation skills. "The resource offers eight website activities along with a series of supporting worksheets, that can either be used in the classroom, or given as an extension activity for homework. The pupils' area is broken down into four theme units of work: Sound; Rhythm; Mood; Orchestra; followed by an online quiz giving pupils the opportunity to demonstrate their learning."
Possible uses:
Students can explore these activities in a series as they seek to solve the mystery. Each activity can also be done independently. Teachers can share the activities on a projector for an entire class or have students work in a computer lab on their own. In the teacher“s guide, lesson plans and worksheets are provided to gain the most from the website.
