Literacy Center.net
Recommendation:
The activities provided are use simple graphics and no animated characters. The colors are bright and the activities are easy to understand. Each activity has several levels to build and challenge a student in that skill. In the parent/teacher section there is a pull-down menu that is easier to use than the main page, to see the range and content of activities rather than just embarking on one through the main page.
Description:
Literacy Center.net provides beginning literacy activities in English, Spanish, German and French. Find activities to learn letters, colors, numbers, shapes, phonemes and learn to write the alphabet and spell some words. From the website: "The National Research Council's study `Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children“ states that children who are exposed to reading at an early age make the symbol/language connection and are more likely to be reading at the appropriate age level by the end of third grade. "The Literacy Center aims to provide safe learning activities for parents and teachers to share with young children. It follows a modified Montessori approach to teaching reading. As a pre and early reading curriculum, it assumes that each online lesson will be supported by appropriate offline instruction, either at home or in school."
Possible uses:
Students learning any of the four languages on this site can use these activities to learn and practice basic skills. Teachers can share these activities with students as a whole class, in small groups or work through activities with individuals.
