Invention at Play
Recommendation:
Students should hear over and over that there are endless possibilities about what careers they might have and what skills they are capable of. This site encourages play and flexibility. While the interesting components of this site are simple (the Invention Playhouse), sometimes the simple experiences are the ones that encourage creativity. The stories are interesting and some follow products from the idea through the process to product.
Description:
Invention at Play is a traveling exhibit and this site carries a portion of the exhibit materials. This site encourages play while examining how play influences inventors and inventions. There are three areas of the site: Inventors“ Stories, Invention Playhouse and Does Play Matter? View stories about inventors and the process of specific inventions. Explore creative interactive experiences to engage in flexible thinking. Read about favorite toys of inventors. Alexander Graham Bell: "We are all too much inclined to walk through life with our eyes shut. There are things all around us, and right at our very feet, that we have never seen; because we have never really looked."
Possible uses:
Use this site to introduce students to the idea of invention and the sense that they all are inventors. Use the single experiences in the Invention Playhouse to encourage flexible thinking and problem solving. Read inventors“ stories and compare and contrast the qualities and paths of these people.
