Immigration History Research Center
Recommendation:
In 2006 the topic of immigration is a focus again. This site shares historical information as well as discussing current issues. In this way, the site reminds students that immigration isn´t only at Ellis Island in America´s history, but a part of their lives now. The site is searchable and well organized. It is primarily text and images. This list of `External Links,´ which are other related websites, is well researched and extensive.
Description:
The University of Minnesota shares its extensive collection of resources related to immigration through this website. "The IHRC promotes research on migration with a special emphasis on immigration to the U.S. It brings scholar-specialists from the University into dialogue with university and high school students and their teachers, with print and non-print media workers and with communities of immigrants, ethnic Americans and concerned citizens. The IHRC especially seeks to enrich contemporary debates,so often heated and so often emotional when the subject is immigration, with historical and scholarly perspectives. "Involvement with students reaches well beyond the classrooms of the University of Minnesota. The IHRC works closely with public school teachers in planning workshops and developing curricular materials useful in a wide variety of classrooms. The Friends of the IHRC also offer a yearly award to those high school student participants in `History Day´ who develop a project related to immigration."
Possible uses:
Teachers can find resources to inform their curriculum planning and images to share with students during class. Find lesson plans and opportunities to be involved in `History Day.´ Students can use this website to find research resources, images and to read about current immigration issues.

Correction to IHRC information
The IHRC does not charge for access to its website or materials posted on its website. We do, however, charge for research assistance over and above the usual advice given to researchers. (For instance, if you request that a staff member look up something for you in the archival materials, rather than advising you about how to find it yourself on a research visit.) Use of images or documents beyond "fair use" does require a fee, as with most materials that educators might use. Please correct the listing to reflect this.
If you would like additional information about the IHRC, I'd be happy to correspond with you. We are continually adding materials to our digital collections, and we hope that this provides even more access to educators and other researchers.
