While the site is intended to accompany the film, it has quality offerings that that students can utilize. The site is well organized and provides good quality images and video. The tone is realistic. The people are real. The text is at an appropriate reading level.
Description:
Homeland is a PBS documentary film about four families from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. This companion website shares stories, images, video, information, lesson plans and additional resources. From the site: "Among poverty, homelessness, poor health and alcoholism - the harsh conditions of reservation life - families strive to create a better future for their children and the generations to come. "Four Lakota families open their hearts and homes in HOMELAND, an inspirational portrait of reservation life."
Possible uses:
A Quicktime preview can be shared with students. The film is no longer on the broadcast schedule, but may be found at a library or is available for purchase for educational use through Berkeley Media. Parts of the site can be used independently of the film. Teachers can find useful information, lessons and multimedia presentations to share with students to connect to a study. Students can read pages on the site for research. Teachers can share several sites with students to develop an understanding of the broad range of Reservations and Native American experiences across the country.
