Recommendation:

This WebQuest has steps that connect to the student directly. Students do not just read and research for this project; they see a slide show and create presentation materials. The requirements are explicit and ask for quality input. Because the first step is determining one´s body mass index, students may be self conscious or embarrassed. Description:

Students work through five steps to complete this WebQuest. After research, projects and writing, groups prepare a persuasive presentation to school leaders about how schools are contributing to the obesity epidemic and how to help prevent it. From the introduction: "You are to pair with another student to complete research and activities that will help you answer this essential question: How does obesity represent an epidemic in America, and how can we help prevent this dangerous trend?"

Possible uses:

Students work in pairs to complete the five steps in this project. Teachers can also use the documents, articles and slideshow as presentation tools in teaching, even if the WebQuest is not used. Teachers can visit the Resources page to find very complete lesson plans for the unit.
