This site is easy to use and appropriate for the age level. The readings are brief, but interesting. The main educational value from the site is to understand the use of symbol and color in a portrait.

Description:

From England´s National Portrait Gallery, this site shares four portraits, all from different centuries. Learn about the colors and symbols used in the painting. Read information about the painting, too. Create a piece of art adding symbols, color and adjusting features on a cartoon portrait. "It's interactive and engaging with instinctive, visual navigation and a non-linear layout - giving children a sense of control over their learning experience." From the front page, connect to the Show Me site to find other resources from the UK´s museums and galleries.

Possible uses:

Share this site on a projector with students to study the four portraits and discuss the techniques used in portraiture. Working in pairs in a computer lab, have different groups examine different portraits and then share their findings with the class with a projected image. Compare and contrast the portrait details from these different centuries. Allow students to play with the creative area to engage their choices about symbol and color.
