This site has all the components of a truly awesome multimedia unit. Not only does the site teach about a historical person and time period, it teaches students how history is garnered from primary materials. Activities related to examining primary source materials get students involved in the discovery of the information. Students can then take what they learn and apply it to their own project using the tools and lessons on the site to guide them. The area for teachers has helpful information on ways to use the site. Be aware the story contains a rape.

Description:

DoHistory is a multimedia unit that focuses on Martha Ballard and the story A Midwife´s Tale. The site explores the historical discovery process of piecing together the history. From the website: "DoHistory invites you to explore the process of piecing together the lives of ordinary people in the past. It is an experimental, interactive case study based on the research that went into the book and film A Midwife's Tale, which were both based upon the remarkable 200-year-old diary of midwife/healer Martha Ballard. Although DoHistory is centered on the life of Martha Ballard, you can learn basic skills and techniques for interpreting fragments that survive from any period in history. We hope that many people will be inspired by Martha Ballard's story to do original research on other `ordinary´ people from the past."

Possible uses:

Use the entire site as a unit of study of the time period and the events or use components of the site as they fit into current curriculum. Utilize the lessons and activities geared towards the discovery and interpretation of historical evidence and the guides for examining primary source materials. Find another diary of the times to examine. Use elements of the book, with video clips from the movie, to examine various elements of the history.
