Commodities Market Simulation
Recommendation:
There is a competition component to the site, requiring at least 8 weeks of participation. Start dates for these competitions are every other week. Look at the registration page for more information. It is also suggested that the unit start 2 weeks before beginning the simulation. This unit requires a large time commitment. A toll free number is provided and an online help form to assist teachers and students with all types of questions during this simulation.
Description:
Using current news and market information, students trade up to $100,000 of fictitious funds. In the process they learn about the market and making wise choices with their investments. From the site: "Commodities Market Simulation is the most comprehensive investment simulation on the Internet and the easiest to implement into any Finance, Economics or Investments class. CMS is the only simulation offering commodities, futures, options and spots."
Possible uses:
Teachers can try the simulation and then embark on this unit with their class. Students participate in teams (though a team can be made up of one.) Researching, reading and making careful choices are a part of the investment process.
