Art 21 is a well organized website. It is easy to find information and understand the material presented. This program receives rave reviews from many sources. The three season series began in 2001, and does re-air on PBS television. However, being tied to a tv schedule makes the option to purchase the program on DVD appealing. Other educational resources are also for sale to accompany the show. The site provides an online lesson library that is searchable in multiple ways - by subject area, artist, theme, topic or lesson plan title. The site is a great companion tool to the series, offering images, video clips and information for teachers and students.

Description:

Art 21 is a PBS television 3-part series about 21 contemporary artists, their lives and their work. From the website: "The Art:21 series and accompanying educational materials have been developed to familiarize teachers and students with the work of living artists, to provoke critical thinking and problem solving, to present creative role models, to bridge diverse subject areas and to inspire new ways of teaching and learning through the study and appreciation of contemporary art. The arts of our time is relevant to all subject areas and disciplines, providing teachers and students with a rich resource through which to consider new ideas, rethink the familiar and enhance visual literacy."

Possible uses:

Utilizing the series, classes can benefit from intimate conversations with artists about their lives and their work. Using the website in conjunction with the series and teaching materials, teachers can offer a complete and enriching learning experience. The website offers video clips and information that can be used without seeing the series in its entirety. Teachers can adapt lessons to use these clips to learn about the life of an artist. Teachers can develop professional development opportunities related to the work of Art 21.
