It is amazing to have current information about volcanoes and to see live images. The site is primarily information, with little for students to do to interact with the information. As a tool in a unit on volcanoes, it is useful.

Description:

From the website: "AVO has three primary objectives: to conduct monitoring and other scientific investigations in order to assess the nature, timing, and likelihood of volcanic activity; to assess volcanic hazards associated with anticipated activity, including kinds of events, their effects, and areas at risk; and to provide timely and accurate information on volcanic hazards, and warnings of impending dangerous activity, to local, state, and federal officials and the public."

Possible uses:

Classes studying volcanoes can use this site to keep up with current information about the volcanoes in Alaska. Activity, a webcam and FAQs can all provide interesting information for students. Connect to other USGS observatories in the Cascades, Hawaii, Long Valley and Yellowstone from the homepage. Study seismograph information and learn how to analyze the data.
