Journey North offers a complete plan for any variety of involvement in their projects. The site is well laid out and includes innumerable resources for teachers who participate in a study or who wish to find valuable information about teaching strategies for inquiry, instruction, assessment and reading. The 'Teacher Resources' page also provides information about professional development through The Journey.

Description:

From the website: "Journey North engages students in a global study of wildlife migration and seasonal change. K-12 students share their own field observations with classmates across North America. They track the coming of spring through the migration patterns of monarch butterflies, bald eagles, robins, hummingbirds, manatees, whooping cranes -- and other birds and mammals, the budding of plants, changing sunlight and other natural events. Find standards-based lesson plans, activities and information to help students make local observations and fit them into a global context. Widely considered a best-practices model for education, Journey North is the nation's premiere 'citizen science' project for children. The general public is also welcome to participate."

Possible uses:

Teachers can sign up their classes to report on a wide range of migrations and seasonal plant and animal signs in their own backyards. The activities and projects vary in terms of time commitment and depth of involvement. Classes can participate in an activity to find 'mystery classes' by tracking clues about the amount of sunlight a country receives along with information about history, geography and culture. Students can utilize this site for research about related migration and seasonal topics. Professional Development for teachers is offered.
