This WebQuest asks a good deal of students, which is appropriate for the group for which it is intended. The complexity of the task and the requirement to research, support and collaborate on decisions encourages quality learning through this process. This project was designed for 'Advanced Marketing,' where students would have previously taken a marketing course to verse them in business education terms, theories and concepts. A thorough teacher guide page is provided as well as rubrics for group and individual evaluations.

Description:

Through this WebQuest, students embark on the task of creating a successful sport franchise. From the website: "Congratulations! Your group has been awarded the new sports franchise for your city. Professional sports franchises have become some of the most challenging, expensive, and lucrative opportunities in the Entertainment industry today. It is your job to build a successful organization from top to bottom... "You will build a professional sports franchise that will be successful both on and off the field. You can choose one of the four 'major league' sports (baseball, football, basketball, or hockey) and locate your team in a city that does not have such a team. The management organization (your group) will put together a team that is 'adopted' by a city and is able to get the fans to spend their hard earned money for tickets and merchandise (shirts, hats, cups, etc.) Just as important is the need to turn a profit. How will both goals be accomplished? That is the challenge all sports executives face."

Possible uses:

This WebQuest is designed for twelfth grade marketing students. Once introduced, students work in teams to complete the tasks of creating a business plan that includes player personnel, marketing, facility design and management and public/community relations. After working independently and cooperatively, groups make an oral and multimedia presentation.
