Braille Bug Site
Recommendation:
This site is a wonderful introduction to braille and a great research resource on Helen Keller. The activities in braille are simple and will not overwhelm children. The information on the site includes learning about the experience and blind culture, too. The next steps include meeting someone who reads braille and seeing materials printed in braille to further experience the language.
Description:
Braille Bug provides a valuable resource for those who read braille and those who wish to learn more about it. From the website: "The information, activities and games found on the Braille Bug web site are designed to teach children in grades 3 through 6 about braille. As they explore the site, children will be able to: develop an appreciation for the efficiency and versatility of braille; learn why and how Louis Braille invented the literary braille code; understand the importance of braille for another famous blind person, Helen Keller; learn to recognize braille letters and numbers; describe different ways to read and write braille, including the use of technology; use suggested resources to learn more about braille, blindness and related topics."
Possible uses:
Classes can participate in an online book club, whether they read the book in braille or print. Students can conduct research about braille and connect to the online Helen Keller Museum. Messages can be sent to Helen's great-grandniece to ask research questions. Students can participate in several activities to begin learning letters and numbers in braille. Teachers can order braille alphabet cards free for their class. A braille writing kit is available for purchase. Teachers can join the mailing list, find additional resources and connect to the American Foundation for the Blind.
