This site offers a comprehensive look at bridge building - past and present. From bridge design to women involved in construction, the site captures a wide scope of information, history and technology involved in this project. The images are clear; the interactives are interesting and educational.

Description:

The New Bay Bridge site chronicles the creation of the new San Francisco Bay Bridge, to be completed in 2007. "It will boast the world's first single-tower self-anchored suspension span and some of the largest and heaviest components ever seen in bridge-building, all assembled by the biggest equipment ever seen on the Bay." Get updates from the job site, find history of the current bridge, see photos and video from the site, hear sounds and see animations about the process.

Possible uses:

Depending on grade level, this site can be used in many ways. Younger students may like to see images of construction vehicles and have teachers disseminate information about the project to them. Older students can use the site as a reference point for a unit on bridges. Click on 'Build a Bridge' to find a simulation students can participate in.
