Amazon Interactive
Recommendation:
During the ecotourism project, teachers may want to create questions or forms to fill in to ensure that students carefully read information and don't just jump to the bottom of the page to make the next decision. Consequences of choices appear, but students are also given the choice to go back and try the other option if their choice leads to a 'dead end.'
Description:
From the website: "Explore the geography of the Ecuadorian Amazon through online games and activities. Learn about the rain forest and the Quichua people who call it home. Discover the ways in which the Quichua live off the land. Then try your hand at running a community-based ecotourism project along the R"o Napo." "Ecotourism has also become popular among people interested in both environmental conservation and sustainable development. It has been called a way to save the rain forest and a 'win-win development strategy for undeveloped rural areas.' "In many situations, however, ecotourism fails to deliver on its promise. Many researchers have studied ecotourism's failures as well as its successes. In this game, you can try your hand at developing an ecotourism project in the Amazon."
Possible uses:
This site can be used to study the geography and culture of the Amazon rain forest. Additionally, it can be used to study ecotourism through an interactive project. Teachers can use the geography component of the site to teach students about the Amazon and then lead in to the ecotourism project. Students can work in pairs or individually to make choices about ecotourism.
