The Shoah Foundation
Recommendation:
This site is well organized and contains high quality video clips and online exhibits. The resource is immense, so time and care in choosing video clips is necessary. Students will be moved by what they see and hear and the classroom exercises encourage thinking about bias and intolerance in a more general manner. Be mindful of this topic and the content of the testimonies used to be appropriate and sensitive to students.
Description:
The Shoah Foundation was started by Steven Spielberg after creating the movie 'Shindler's List.' The Foundation collected 52,000 testimonies, digitally indexed them for search purposes and now utilizes these video clips for educational purposes. Online exhibits, short films and classroom exercises aimed at teaching about the Holocaust make up this site. From the website: "The Shoah Foundation develops new products and programs that support teachers as they address the difficult issues of intolerance and bias in their classrooms."
Possible uses:
Teachers can research for specific testimony to complement curriculum and order these on video for $35. Classes can utilize the online testimony clips, four online exhibits with teacher's guide and classroom exercises to enhance a unit of study with primary source material. Students can access a timeline, glossary, watch testimony and explore online exhibits independently while conducting research.
