Recommendation:

This site offers a reading program online for free. Software of such a program would not be this extensive; this is truly a wonderful gift. The 46 lessons are presented in animated game format, which may or may not appeal to parents of young children, but they serve their purpose in engaging and entertaining while learning. The site is not just for students having difficulties reading; any child would benefit from these activities.

From the website: "StudyDog is a complete Early Reading (pre-K thru 2nd grade) computer-based program aligned with the findings of the National Reading Panel. StudyDog Reading provides all of the components of a complete, evidence-based, comprehensive and effective early-childhood reading program. "Our vision is that 'Success in life begins with reading.' Our mission is to help every young reader no matter what their financial means. We achieve this by providing a world-class reading program, using a socially responsible business-philanthropy model, that is leveraged with technology." StudyDog is organized in three overlapping reading levels in order to provide different entry points into the lessons.  Level 1 starts with learning letters of the alphabet and is the entry point for most beginning readers.  Level 2 starts with the middle of Level 1 lessons and is the entry point for children who know the alphabet and most of the simple sounds of the letters.  Level 3 begins with explicit instruction of short and long vowel sounds and builds complexity of vocabulary, letter combinations and complex words.  Independent reading is introduced at this level.  

Possible uses:

Teachers can download the program and use it in its entirety or select lessons for the whole class or specific students who need reinforcement of select skills. Share the site with parents whose children need additional support to work on these lessons at home or offer it as a way to keep students learning over the summer or during vacations.
