This site is simple to use and a good research tool for students to use independently. The explanations of instruments vary; some are longer with historical information, others are simply a physical description of the instrument. Searching instruments by geography is a good feature to incorporate cultural exploration.

Description:

The Instrument Encyclopedia provides an online resource of more than 140 instruments from around the world. The instruments are from the Stearns Collection at the University of Michigan. From the site: "The purpose of this site is to allow you to explore the diversity and creativity of musical traditions as you browse our gallery or search for a favorite instrument."

Possible uses:

Browse instruments by geographic location or by instrument type. Students can utilize this site for researching instruments. Music teachers can share this site via a projector to introduce new instruments to students and share instruments from around the world. Sound clips of some instruments are included.
