Visual Collections
Recommendation:
This site offers a unique service by providing many collections together to search and compare. The site is also limited since not all the world's collections of art, photography, maps or architecture are present. Of course it would also be great if access to all the collections were free, too. The images are good quality and the potential is immense for this site to grow and continue to be a valued resource to educators.
Description:
Explore over 300,000 art images from over 35 collections. From the site: "While each collection is rich with its own imagery, character and information, viewing several collections simultaneously creates a powerful set of images for all to study, admire and enjoy. "Users can search through multiple collections ranging from antiquity to the present for a particular artist, time period or medium. View ancient Chinese scrolls, architectural slides, modern art installations or historical maps of the Americas all from your desktop using Luna Imaging's Insight software. "Searching for a particular collection is easy as they have been organized into 5 topics: Cartography; Fine Arts; Architecture; Photography and Other, and are also presented as a complete list in the 'View All' tab. "There are both free and subscription based collections. By clicking on the description link below each collection a separate pop-up window will appear with a full description of the collection and a link to its main site."
Possible uses:
The viewers allow users to zoom in on details and view multiple images simultaneously. Similar images over a span of time or from similar time periods in different collections can be compared in order to study culture and art.
