This site is one of the best map sites available. It provides multiple ways to view historical maps and interact with the maps. The image quality is good, the collection is extensive and the browsers are advanced.

View historical maps in a variety of formats, including three dimensions! From the website: "The David Rumsey Historical Map Collection has over 11,000 maps online. The collection focuses on rare 18th and 19th century North and South America maps and other cartographic materials. Historic maps of the World, Europe, Asia and Africa are also represented. Collection categories include antique atlas, globe, school geography, maritime chart, state, county, city, pocket, wall, children's and manuscript maps. The collection can be used to study history, genealogy and family history."
Possible uses:
Use this site to complement American history studies or to learn about imagining technology. View maps side by side for comparisons, zoom in to further inspect a map and print or save these maps for future use. Use the 3-D format to 'fly through' a map and the interactive GIS viewer to overlay various components on an interactive map. From the home page, click on 'Read an article' in yellow to see a recounting of the technological process of digitizing the collection and the variety of software to create the different maps and layouts.
