Learning from a Legacy of Hate
Recommendation:
This is an interesting project with lots of potential. The teaching ideas and resources are of high quality. The historical information is centered in the state of Indiana, which does not make it irrelevant to the rest of the country, but additional research to find information about your home state might add relevance and meaning to students. The video quality of the interviews is not great and the interviewees simply sit and tell their story. The interviews are interesting, but students really need to pay attention to the words because the people are not actors working on inflection or professional story tellers.
Description:
Learning from a Legacy of Hate is a website created by a group of 15 college students at Ball State University. The focus of the site is on 'hate speech,' expression to demean, oppress or promote violence against someone based on their social or ethnic membership. The site contains interviews, history, teaching ideas, and reviews of music and movies. From the website: "Our mission is to educate and inform society about hate speech, a most injurious form of communication. Our objective is to open people's minds and hearts to the experiences of others. Our goal is to provoke thought and encourage change by challenging people to make a difference in the fight against intolerance."
Possible uses:
Several teaching resources and ideas are available on this site. Lesson plans and accompanying documents focus on race relations, sexuality and stereotypes. Additional links are included in the areas of the power of words, racism, religion and general resources. Students can view interviews, share their own stories or interview people in their community to add to this site.
