The Miniature Earth
Recommendation:
While this is compelling information and visually interesting graphics, it is hard to determine the use for the classroom. Perhaps it would be useful for students to realize the world is bigger than their backyards and it would lead to interesting discussions that simply make students more conscious citizens. The connection to a specific curricular focus is less clear, though it merits a viewing.
Description:
Miniature Earth is a slide show presentation of "The Global Village" by Donella Meadows. The slide show is available in ten languages. The premise is that if we could turn the population of the Earth into a community of 100 people, keeping the same proportions we have, what various ethnicities, religions, economic means, etc. would be.
Possible uses:
Classes studying cultures, socio economic class and other concerns of humans can find a presentation for discussion, debate and eye-opening data. Click on 'text only' to find an additional text version of the CD that includes more data. Link to "We Were Humans" for another presentation about how the cost of war could be redirected to help those in poverty.
