This site primarily focuses on historical music. Pop music will not be found here. Music published after 1923 does not contain a cover page image or music pages because they are not public domain. Titles may be discovered here and then found at a local library or other source. The site is well organized; providing pages on how to utilize and effectively search the contents.

Description:

This is a collection of music covers and scores of two centuries of popular American music. Each document includes relevant information (composer, publication, form, subject, first line, etc.) when available. From the website: "The Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music consists of over 29,000 pieces of American popular music. The collection spans the years 1780 to 1980, but its strength is its thorough documentation of nineteenth-century American through popular music. The collection is especially strong in music spawned by military conflicts from the War of 1812 through World War I, and minstrel music is also well-represented. Other topics include music about the circus; dance; drinking, temperance, and smoking; fraternal orders; presidents; romantic and sentimental songs; schools and colleges; and transportation."

Possible uses:

Teachers can find music scores and information related to social and historical events in America to incorporate into curriculum. Students can use this site to find music to play. Research can be conducted about various music lyrics and style over the centuries, using the search engines and 38 categorical topics.
