Poetry and Music of the War Between the States
Recommendation:
Teachers can use the site to create an interdisciplinary component of a history unit. This site is focused on the music and poetry of the Civil War. However, it provides extensive background information about each piece or author/composer. It makes no claim to being a comprehensive history site and provides additional links to support viewers' interests. The site is easy to navigate with multiple ways to view listings.
Description:
Poetry and Music of the War Between the States provides a collection of poetry and music from American history in the 1860s. Background notes accompany the songs and poems and additional resources are provided. From the website: "The War Between the States was the pivotal event in our Nation's history. If you want only the facts about the conflict, any textbook will do. But if you want to understand the thoughts and emotions of the men who faced each other across the battlefield and those who waited for them at home, look to the poems and songs written during and after the War."
Possible uses:
Classes studying the Civil War (or War Between the States), can learn about the emotions and thoughts of the people involved. Students can listen to music, read poetry, learn about the authors and composers and see selected images from the Library of Congress. Students can conduct research about individuals listed on the site. Reading through the FAQ portion of the site, teachers can find additional links related to the Civil War. Music teachers can use the MIDI files to provide the instrumental music for songs.
