Playwriting in the Round
Recommendation:
This is an opportunity for students to grow in their writing with an immediate audience of their peers. Students will benefit from reading how their ideas were interpreted and changed as other classes write the second and third acts after their first scene. They will also add to other students' writing and have to carefully interpret and predict the next scenes. Because of the collaboration, the project runs in sessions. Plan ahead to be a part of the play writing round. Other students are depending on your students commitment, so be sure it's something you have the time and desire to stay with once you sign up.
Description:
This site offers language arts classes an opportunity to write a mystery play in collaboration with 2 other classes from around the country. "Three age-grouped classes, teamed in a learning circle, collaborate to write the scripts of three different one-act mystery plays. Each play will consist of (3) scenes, with one scene written by each of the classes in the circle. At the conclusion of the project, each class will have three scripts that can be used for reader's theater and other dramatic activities." The site provides a very carefully designed schedule, definition of terms and guidance with the play writing process.
Possible uses:
A whole class or small group of students can study the play writing process and then grow from the creative differences and interpretations from students in other schools. The site also provides resources to teachers for a unit study of mystery plays.
