FFFBI International Missions from National Geographic
Recommendation:
While the international geography component is limited to Japan, Australia and India, the skills incorporated into these activities are highly useful to students. 'Perp Walk' would be a wonderful activity to introduce students to a mystery unit. The animation is clear and contains humor. The mysteries do not include harm to people or animals.
Description:
The FFFBI, the Fin, Fur and Feather Bureau of Investigation, presents mysteries for students to solve while they hone their reading, research, geography and critical thinking skills. Mystery missions along with trivia games and other intriguing activities make up this site. From ESN 'Site of the Week' review: "As agents for the fictional Fin, Fur and Feather Bureau of Investigation (FFFBI), students ages 8-13 are invited to undertake a series of imaginative online missions designed to enhance their geographical knowledge and increase their understanding of foreign cultures. From Tokyo to India's Bollywood and the Australian outback, students will use their newfound geographic skills to hunt down the FFFBI's most wanted animal fugitives. With names like the Cyber-Toothed Tigers and the Axis of Weasels, each adventure promises to hold a new twist for the young student detectives."
Possible uses:
Click on the page, 'Project Info' and then on 'For Teachers' to access all the various activities available on this site. At the bottom of the teacher page you can choose the elementary or middle school level for these activities. Students can participate in the three main geography missions (Japan, India and Australia) in about an hour each. These missions are set up as dialogue between three characters. Students can read these aloud, like a play script, or a small group can act these out as part of an enrichment project/presentation. Classes can engage in other missions via the 'Mission of the Month,' conducting research and answering questions. The games encourage logic and critical thinking.
